Single-player open-world undersea exploration game
Dave the Diver is a paid two-dimensional undersea exploration and resource-farming role-playing game that immerses users in a realm simply known as the “Blue Hole.” Various areas will need to be investigated and searched with the help of three additional non-playable characters with unique quirks. This is a single-player adventure game.
Dave the Diver features an oxygen health bar when diving deep. Players can expect smooth and well-designed graphics. It can also be loosely grouped with other games that offer an ocean-inspired environment, such as Zoo Tycoon: Marine Marina, this one is narrative-driven and there are plenty of secrets to unlock.
Exploration with an educational appeal
Dave the Diver is perfectly suitable for casual players as well as anyone who wishes to learn about unique marine ecosystems. You will be introduced to various species of flora and fauna as they descend deeper into the depths. However, some character movements may experience latency. On the other hand, one interesting element within this game involves the plot, which is hilarious and surreal at times, but still plenty fun.
While the protagonist is an explorer by day, many of the ingredients that he collects can be used to create sushi dishes at a restaurant that he owns. Meanwhile, the resource farming feature of the game is also an important aspect, as skills and tools must be used to engage in unexpected encounters with dangerous creatures as well as to collect ingredients. Talk to other customers for hidden secrets and hints.
Other tasks, such as monitoring how much air remains within an oxygen tank and avoiding sharks, provide an entirely varied experience. Concurrently, the game’s narrative shines with its band of eccentric characters, providing a light-hearted touch to the adventure. The story is rich with humor, and packed with in-jokes that make every interaction a delight. However, the repetitive nature of the gameplay and no online co-op mode may bore some players.
Dave the Diver x Like a Dragon: the Ichiban’s Holiday DLC
Dave the Diver's "Ichiban's Holiday" DLC, a crossover with Sega's Like a Dragon series features beat-em-up gameplay, crossover mini-games, and character recruitment from the Like a Dragon universe. Director Jaeho Hwang cites a meeting with Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio's lead as the inspiration for this collaboration, aiming to blend the best of both games. This marks another crossover for Dave the Diver, following previous collaborations with IPs like Godzilla and Dredge.
The DLC follows Ichiban Kasuga as he explores the Blue Hole, teaming up with Dave and Cobra to fight poachers and the Sea Blue gang. Beyond the beat-em-up action, players can recruit Like a Dragon characters to help at Dave's restaurant. This isn't the only upcoming Dave the Diver DLC; "In the Jungle" is planned for late 2025, further strengthening the incorporation of the Like a Dragon universe to this game.
Business and undersea pleasure
Dave the Diver combines the excitement of undersea exploration with real-world management responsibilities, such as those displayed in similar games. Its ability to educate players about marine life while engaging them in an intriguing sushi-making subplot adds layers to gameplay that are both enriching and diverse. The presence of humorous NPCs further elevates the gaming experience, ensuring that the narrative remains fresh and entertaining despite occasional latency in character movements.
